With the cost of a transplant often exceeding $500,000, many transplant patients are unable to shoulder the financial burden of such a procedure. The Children's Organ Transplant Association (COTA) is a national charity dedicated to organizing and guiding communities in raising funds for transplant-needy patients. In Littleton, volunteers are raising funds for transplant patients like local teen Jaclyn Perea.
Born on April 30, 1994, Jaclyn was diagnosed with Juvenile Nephronophthisis Type 1, and doctors at Lucile Packard Children's Hospital in Palo Alto, California, performed a life-saving kidney transplant on July 5th, 2009. An estimated $45,000 is being raised by Littleton volunteers.

Jaclyn's Story :
Hi, my name is Jaclyn. Thank you for visiting my website. My mom and I will try to keep you updated on my journey to get a new kidney. My journey started when I was born, but nobody knew it. It wasn't until I was about 8 years old that I started feeling dizzy a lot, but my symptoms confused all of the doctors. My mom took me to see Nephrologists, Hemotologists, Endocrynologists and Cardiologists at several different hospitals and nobody could diagnose me. It was very frustrating. In Feb 2007, I was feeling very sick again and had some swollen glands on my neck. My mom took me to my awesome PCP, Dr. Ann Smith-Rudnick, SW Family Medicine, Littleton, CO (absolutely the best PCP in the world) and they ran some blood tests. That is when they determined my kidneys were failing. The Nephrologists at Childrens Hospital in Colorado sent some of my blood work to Dr. Hildrebrandt, Professor of Pediatrics and Human Genetics at the University of Michigan, where he diagnosed me with NPHP type 1 (juvenile nephronophthisis), which causes kidney failure between the ages of 13 and 19.
On Jan 2nd of last year (2008), I started hemodialysis to clean the toxins out of my blood three times a week at Childrens Hospital in Colorado. It takes about 1/2 hour to get hooked up to the dialysis machine, 3 1/2 hours to drain and clean my blood and another 1/2 hour to unhook from the machine. I feel very weak and have awful headaches during and after dialysis. I hope to get a new kidney soon so that I can enjoy a wonderful, healthy, active life!!
Thank you from the bottom of my heart for all of your prayers and support.....and for visiting my new website!
University of Colorado
Thank you to the CU (Boulder) Cheer and Dance Teams that supported Jaclyn by wearing green ribbons, selling Organ Donor Bracelets (Green with "Donate Save a Life" on them) and educating everyone about "Jaclyn's Journey to get a Kidney" before the CU/OSU game on November 15th. Coach Travis invited Jaclyn to the VIP lounge to hang out with them during half-time and then kidnapped her for the second half of the game. She danced on the sidelines with Chip (CU Mascot). Thank you for your support. CU is the GREATEST!
Sigma Alpha Epsilon
In Honor of Jaclyn
The fraternity of Sigma Alpha Epsilon (CU-Boulder) with the assistance of 3 amazing angels, Holly, Kaylee and Erin, hosted the Duck Dash of 2008 to raise funds for Jaclyn's kidney. The ducks (rubber) waddled to the river and raced to the finish line. Great prizes, donated by many of Boulder's finest merchants, were won by many. There were between 600-700 people in attendance throughout the evening. It was great fun and more than $3100 was earned for Jaclyn's transplant fund! Thanks to all!
